Five Things You Never Noticed About a Beverage Can
Beverage cans are so familiar that it is easy to overlook how much engineering goes into them. Every curve, coating and component has a purpose, from protecting the beverage to reducing material use and helping the package perform during filling, shipping and storage.
Here are five design details hiding in plain sight.
1. The Curved Bottom Adds Strength
The bottom of a beverage can is curved inward rather than completely flat. This shape helps the lightweight aluminum withstand the internal pressure created by carbonated drinks.
By using geometry to create strength, manufacturers can keep the can durable without using significantly more material.
2. The Narrow Top Uses Less Aluminum
The top of the can is slightly narrower than the body. During production, the upper portion is gradually reduced through a process called necking.
This allows a smaller lid, known as the can end, to be attached. Using a smaller end reduces the amount of aluminum needed while still creating a secure seal.
3. The Tab Is Designed to Stay Attached
Today’s stay-on tabs are the result of an important design improvement. Older pull tabs detached completely and could become litter or leave behind small, sharp pieces of metal.
Modern tabs open the can while remaining connected to the lid, making the package safer and allowing the tab and can to be recycled together.
4. The Inside Has an Invisible Protective Layer
The beverage inside the can does not sit directly against bare aluminum. A thin internal coating separates the product from the metal.
This coating helps preserve the beverage’s flavor and quality while protecting the can from the ingredients inside. Although consumers rarely notice it, the coating must be applied evenly and consistently during production.
5. The Design Is Printed Directly onto the Can
The artwork on a beverage can is not simply added like a label after the container is finished. Specialized equipment applies ink directly to the can as it moves through the production line at high speed.
Color, alignment and coating must remain consistent across thousands of cans so that each package represents the brand accurately.
Small Package, Complex Design
A beverage can may appear simple, but it is the result of thoughtful engineering, precise manufacturing and careful quality control.
The next time you open a drink, take a closer look. Every part of the can, from its curved base to its printed design, was created with a specific purpose.
At Can-One USA, we help beverage brands bring those details together in a package that protects the product, supports the brand and stands out on the shelf.
